I had a client who wanted to buy followers. She wanted to look bigger online, to appear further along than she actually was. The logic was: if I look the part, maybe opportunities will find me.
I understand the logic. I've felt the same pull. But here's what I know about how the subconscious actually works.
When you build on a fake foundation, two things happen simultaneously. Externally, the algorithm reads the fake engagement and buries your content further, not the other way around. But internally, something worse happens. The subconscious registers the gap between what you're projecting and what you're actually earning. It files that gap as evidence of inadequacy. The performance doesn't inflate your confidence. It quietly erodes it because on some level you know it isn't real.
Real confidence is built through doing the work and accumulating actual evidence. A thousand loyal people who genuinely care about what you're building will do more for your self-belief, your results, and your life than a hundred thousand bought names ever could.
You don't build a strong subconscious on borrowed credibility. You build it on earned evidence.
